PhD Position in Physics

The thin film and semiconductor physics group at the Science Institute University of Iceland and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Århus, Denmark, have one vacant position for a PhD student in Defect-related magnetism in wide-bandgap semiconductors. The main focus of the research work will be sample preparation and characterisation for study with ⁵⁷Fe emission Mössbauer spectroscopy following implantation of radioactive ⁵⁷Mn. The Mössbauer measurements are performed at the ISOLDE facilities at CERN, Switzerland.

Qualifications

• The student must have completed a MSc degree or an equivalent degree in physics or electrical engineering.

• Experience with one or more of the following fields is required: Thin film growth, characterisation and clean-room fabrication and/or Mössbauer spectroscopy.

• Ability to work independently and responsibly is essential.

• Good communication skills and excellent English skills are required.

Terms

The PhD student will be project-funded employee of the Science Institute at the University of Iceland. The period of employment is 3 years with a possibility of extension, depending on successful project funding. The student will stay 60% of the time in Iceland, 20% in Århus and 20% at CERN. The ⁵⁷Mn collaboration at ISOLDE/CERN

The collaboration consists of scientists from institutes in Europa (Denmark, Iceland, Belgium, Germany and Italy) and South Africa. The aim of the group is to utilize the ⁵⁷Mn beam at ISOLDE/CERN for Mössbauer studies of specific materials. Given the current high interest in Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors, this has been the main subject of the group in recent years.
