These lecture notes have been used over the years in various graduate courses given at the Department of Physics and Astronomy (formerly the Institute of Physics) at the University of Aarhus, Denmark. The Danish original dates back to 1974, the English translation to 1978.
At places, reference appears to articles published in the Danish journal abbreviated Mat.Fys.Medd.Dan.Vid.Selsk. These papers may now be found at http://www.sdu.dk/Bibliotek/matfys. (Note: In this link select volume and issue number but disregard year of publication at the lowest level.)
